Animal Handling

Olson Farms practices low stress handling practices and techniques at all their feed yards, as they believe that minimizing stress during all phases of cattle production is proven to improve overall health and efficiencies. Vaccine efficacy is also dramatically improved when processing cattle in a relaxed atmosphere and when restrained properly. All employees receive certification in the Beef Quality Assurance Program to ensure that they are educated in these low stress practices and techniques.

Main Yard

This feedlot location was purchased by Olson Farms in 1987 and additional pens were added in 1989. It is located 6 ½ miles west of North Platte on Highway 30 and is permitted for a one-time capacity of 12500 head. Our office is located here, and all billing goes through this location.

Beer Creek

This is where the backgrounding cattle are fed at Olson Farms as well as cattle that are enrolled in the natural and hormone free programs. The pens border pivots where cattle are placed before bringing them into the pens. This has proven to be a big asset to the backgrounding program, as it enables cattle that have been stressed or have health issues to become healthier before they are housed in a smaller location. This yard is located north of I-80 approximately 6 ½ miles west of North Platte and is permitted for a one-time capacity of 5200 head.

Cow Camp

Cow Camp is Olson Farms’s newest feed yard, which was built in 2015. It was designed and engineered by Settje Engineering with a focus on operational efficiency and environmental engineering solutions. It is located 13 miles south of Hershey, Nebraska on the Hershey Dickens Road and is permitted for a one-time capacity of 30000 head. This yard houses custom beef cattle as well as being the location of a custom dairy heifer development program. Olson Farms partners with Marshland Acres in Durand, Wisconsin in the dairy heifer development program. For more information, please click here.
